The Legendary Cornbread Crew, better known as Cornbread, originated in Trenton, NJ in 2016. The band consists of 7 teenagers who attend(ed) Trenton Central High School and participate in Trenton Central High School Orchestra under the direction of Joseph Pucciatti. Founding members; Khadir Armstrong (vocals), Davontae Leak (drums), Cesar Gonzalez (saxophone), Alphonso Jones II (keyboard), and Lionel Awode (bass guitar), branched off outside of the orchestra and joined together to use their musical abilities along with the friendship and the bond they share to create Cornbread.
The members come from a variety of musical backgrounds such as performing on Broadway, playing with other professional bands, and having musically inclined family members. The boys began to cover popular songs such as Location, That’s What I Like, Kiss It Better alongside others. In June 2017, they performed along with their TCHS Orchestra peers, for a fundraiser at Rita’s Italian Ice. They also played their first unofficial gig for one of the members’ birthday party. Upon the return to school, keyboardist of the group, Jones, left to attend college at Saint Peter’s University. However, he still communicates and performs with the group when he comes home to visit. As a fill in for Jones, the band recruited Wimar Peña, new member of the orchestra who comes from a family of pianists. In November 2017, the group put on 2 sets of shows for their school. The following month, the group’s school held a holiday arts festival which featured a holiday medley by the group. During the same month, Rafiq Salim Jr, friend and fellow orchestra member, joined the band as a guitarist/back-up bassist. Cornbread aspires to continually grow and endeavor into doing more gigs in the future and advance in their professions while having fun.
