2749 views Less than a minute 0

Wilford “Bill” Holcombe (1924-2010) was a flutist, saxophonist, composer arranger known for his work with such prominent musicians as Tommy Dorsey and Peter Nero, as well as his film scores.  He also founded Musicians Publications.

A graduate of Trenton High school and Julliard, he remained in the area throughout his life.  He began playing with the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra as a teenager, beginning a lifelong association.  An April, 2010 Trenton Times article summarized the relationship this way:

“Bill’s contributions to the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra were immeasurable” said Jon Holly, conductor of the GTSO. “He began as a flute and piccolo player, continuing with the orchestra until the New Year’s Eve concert in 2008.”

Curt Yeske, “A Life filled with music: Wilford “Bill” Holcombe dies at 85, Trenton Times April 27, 2010. Page: A03)

He performed as a soloist with several notable ensembles, including the Philadelphia Saxophone Quartet,  and over 100 symphony orchestras. His son, Wilford Holcombe III, is a professional french horn player and teacher.
